What is 10-OH-HHC and how is it made?

10-OH-HHC is a hydroxy derivative of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC). It is formed by the oxidation of HHC. The conversion process to 10-OH-HHC is triggered when cytochrome P450, which is found mainly in the liver and is a key enzyme in the metabolism of foreign substances, is allowed to act on HHC.

The hydroxy derivative of hexahydrocannabinol differs from HHC in that it has an added hydroxyl group (-OH) at the tenth position of the hexahydrocannabinol core . The hydroxyl group consists of one oxygen atom covalently bonded to one hydrogen atom.

10-OH-HHC has a low bioavailability and a short half-life in the body. The half-life is the time it takes for the concentration of cannabinoids in the blood to be halved due to metabolism and excretion. This cannabinoid can be further metabolized into inactive 10-carboxy-HHC .

What are the effects of 10-OH-HHC?

Although research on 10-OH-HHC is still in its early stages, it is believed that the substance exhibits cannabimimetic activity, meaning it can mimic the effects of THC and other cannabinoids. Cannabimimetics, like cannabinoids, bind to the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 in the endocannabinoid system .

The cannabinoid 10-OH-HHC has psychoactive effects, although probably less intense than HHC or THC . Users may experience euphoria, relaxation, changes in perception or increased appetite . However, we do not yet know what receptors and with what effectiveness 10-OH-HHC acts.

The effects will also depend on the route of administration, as more of this cannabinoid can be converted into inactive 10-carboxy-HHC when ingested orally than inhalation or sublingual absorption.

Side effects of 10-OH-HHC

The cannabinoid 10-OH-HHC has not yet been explored, so the list of possible side effects is based on the knowledge we have about analogous compounds with psychoactive effects.

After taking 10-OH-HHC, you may experience:

• Fatigue
• Dry mouth
• Changes in perception
• Increased heart rate
• Nausea
• Anxiety and paranoia

However, other side effects that have not yet been detected may also occur.

Under no circumstances should you take 10-OH-HHC if you are going to drive.

10-OH-HHC entered the market

Manufacturers have not been idle in recent months, and you can already find 10-OH-HHC vapes, gummies, hashes, pre-rolls and flowers infused with 10-OH-HHC distillate in e-shops and brick-and-mortar cannabis stores.

These products meet the maximum permitted THC limit (0.2-0.3%) and are therefore “legal” from this point of view, but they can still bein a legal gray area. What does this mean? That even if they meet the THC limit, their legal status is not (yet) clearly defined in most countries.

Research is pending to evaluate the purity, potency, and safety of commercially available 10-OH-HHC products.

Will there be other HHC derivatives?

In addition to HHC-O and HHC-P and 10-OH-HHC, there are other HHC derivatives, so the question is when products with any of the following cannabinoids will appear:

• HDHHC – 3-Dimethylheptyl-11-hydroxyhexahydrocannabinol

Scientists are constantly trying to isolate “oxygenated” forms of cannabinoids from highly potent Cannabis Sativa varieties or produce them in the laboratory. So you can also come across analogous derivatives of well-known cannabis compounds such as CBD or THC . For example, 7-OH-CBD (7-hydroxycannabidiol) is the active metabolite of cannabidiol (CBD), which is produced in the body by the action of the enzyme CYP2C19.

It should be added that the pharmacology of these substances has been little or not studied at all, so caution is advised with these compounds until all the benefits and risks are evaluated, which also applies to the cannabinoid 10-OH-HHC.
